How to Motivate Teenager

motivation-teenIf the student is totally uncooperative, no matter what measures you take and what tutors you hire, you can’t force children to memorize the information they consider needless. Parents and teachers ask the same question when they have to deal with unmotivated child: why some kids are not motivated and what can we do about it? Laziness and pressure of other children are not always the reasons of this phenomenon, so what are the real causes of unmotivated children?

Almost everybody agree that teenagers don’t want to be unmotivated, but they are due to different troubles and pressures. A lot of students don’t understand their work and want help. If children do not get the help they need, they become more unmotivated and lag further and further behind.A lot of students think that it less embarrassing to do nothing and fail, than to work hard and fail anyway. Very often kids, who think they are not able to learn well, will spend time with other kids who do nothing. This will lead to negative consequences of peer psychological impact and unmotivation. Some children may be forced to study in advanced classes that are too difficult for them or the subject, they have troubles in, isn’t taught appropriately in school. Some students even with slight attention disorder may miss important information during classes.

First of all parents and teachers have to find out why the child gets bad grades in school. Is it because he has troubles with understanding the material, has chronic depression, abuses drugs or undergoes negative influence of peers. Even if you have the slightest suspicions that your kid has attention disorder or learning disability – visit a specialist. Make sure that your child gets the help he (she) needs in school (special reading program or speech therapy). Probably, you will have to hire private tutor.

It’s important to have good emotional connection with your teenager. But even if unmotivated child doesn’t talk too much, you can detect the problem by the child’s poor grades or unwillingness to do homework. Try to oppose him in a supportive and helpful way. Listen to the child attentively. Experienced tutors advice to put oneself in the mind of a child and try to understand disappointment he feels.

If adults try to see the world from a teens’ point of view, they will get mutual understanding as reward for those efforts. The first thing that parents and tutors should do in motivating a teenager is to see things from his point of view.
