First of all, parents should decide weather they want a professional tutor as their child’s counselor in certain subject or agree to hire a high school or a college student. These two variants have their own advantages and disadvantages. Here is a short survey of tutors-professionals and college students as a tutors for children.
Professional tutors
The majority of professional tutors gained a degree in certain field of study or education. This means that your child will train with qualified person, who studied to help student for couple of years and knows how to achieve good results. This sometimes plays decisive role in choice of some parents – they feel more confident and calm knowing that their kid is in the hands of professional.
 Professional tutors teach a child in more structured manner. First they evaluate the level of child’s knowledge and determine gaps in it, and then they design a special program, which satisfies specific needs of a child.
But professionalism may be sometimes a disadvantage. It happens when the professional behavior of a teacher keeps them from becoming a friend to the students. And informal environment is just what some students need for study success. If the child trains with someone close to his/her age it may be much easier to obtain new knowledge.
Students as tutors
Students as tutors may introduce positive and informal atmosphere into sessions. The child will feel more calm and confident during such studies. Some students show better results when they know that their private tutor is also a friend for them.
Student-teacher remembers his/her own experience at school and knows how to explain material in a simple and understandable form. Such tutors still attend classes and they know how to teach the subject they studied not too long ago.
Very often a student-teacher uses more modern teach technique than a professional teacher does. Some professional teachers graduated a long time ago and the teaching style they were taught might become obsolete.
Parents have to learn their child’s preferences and imagine a perfect tutor. The choice of the parents fully depends on the individuality of their kid. Parents have to ask the child whom they want to have as a tutor: would they rather like a young person or experienced professional as their tutor.
If the price factor matters, when a student-tutor will be acceptable since they are much cheaper that teachers from learning centers. Also they have more convenient schedule, which can be adjusted to the schedule of the parents.
