Prioritizing Your Goals
First of all you should prioritize the goals of the session. Try to talk to the student about the critical thinking problems in terms of the paper's overall run. If this seems to take a lot of time, tell the writer that you are going to talk about the flow of his ideas in the end of the session, that first you need to discuss the ideas. Don’t forget to redeem your promise before the end of the lesson.
You have to prioritize among problems in the paper. Thinking problems are the most important and should be discussed first. If a paper consist of adorable sentences, but it suffers from the lack of ideas, it’s unfinished work. So, the main thing in a paper should be idea, reasoning, and thesis. Then you have to pay attention to the structure and logic, paragraphs and syntax and grammar in the end. But you can’t use this grading to all papers, because each work is individual and everything depends on the goals of the paper.
Pacing the Tutoring Session
After getting some experience in tutoring you will know what you can reach in a one-hour session. Also you will know how much time you left till the end of the lesson. A person with no or little experience in tutoring will be surprised at how fast an hour can pass after his or her first lessons. You have to time efficiently and try not to spend too much time for one list box from your plan. Live more time for more important tasks, e.g., for addressing the paper's problems.
Try to keep to the issues you planned to do in your first lessons. If you planned to discuss a couple of problems and they are all important, then try to divide you time appropriately. If some of these problems are less significant, allocate them a few minutes at the session's end.
