The important Moment: Opening the Tutoring Session
The opening moment of any session is very important for the tutor to recommend himself. We’re not talking about greeting itself- it goes without saying it has to be friendly. Greeting moment, as we understand it, it is the moment, when you’ve just read the tutee’s paper and he’s eager to hear your comments on his work.
You should give some work to the student if she or he makes you jumpy. If you ask them to put down a written composition or to answer a question list-that will be the best for both, tutees and tutor. It will help you to concentrate on your reading. For tutees it is the way to get back in their mind to the paper, which they might, forgot about since the last night.
In the reading process you should make written notes or “notes” in your mind for further discussion with students. That will help you to “know the writer” and get prepared for an answer. Also don’t spend too much time for reading if the paper is exceedingly long or unusually difficult to read. You can read only a part of the paper and identify the main paper's problems. But don’t scribble down too much, that will make writer’s anxiety to rise.
Start your comment to the paper with praising something about the paper. That is one of the main moments in discussing the paper and fixing the connection between the tutor and the student. There is always something to praise in each paper - some particular point that is interesting, style, etc. If you find the paper quite weak, you might say that the issue brought up in the paper is very actual but it was not disclosed enough.
