The level of student progress depends on the environment and atmosphere in the classroom. Environmental preferences, along with learning styles of students, play very important role in study process. A teacher can improve the learning advance by choosing the appropriate environment for his students in consideration of their individualities.
Here are some of the most important environmental factors, which should be taken into account when planning perfect session:
1. Formal or informal environment A formal session includes school-like desk or a table and a chair. Students sit on a floor, daybed or on the pillow during informal class. There is the best productivity position of the body for each person depending on his/her preferences. For example, a stoop of the students may indicate that they need more informal environment for better learning.
2. Quiet or noisy It’s very important for some students to hear some extraneous sounds while they study. But for other students additional noise may cause difficulties in remembering and understanding the study material. That’s why it’s better to create a couple of working zones in the classroom or, if the space allows, in the different classrooms. One zone should be isolated from disturbing noise and another should have certain level of sound.
3. Temperature in the classroom The temperature in the classroom is also very important for successful training. Low temperature in the room causes high level of anxiety at students and high temperature may lead to the situation when the students are too relaxed. Students in both of these states have difficulties in remembering new knowledge. In consideration of this fact scientists advice to keep the temperature in the room as low as possible – this will give opportunity for cool-lowers to feel comfortable, and warm-lovers simple may wear additional sweater.
4. Illumination of the classroom Each student need different amount of light for clear vision. One person needs bright light of the lamp while another one is satisfied with natural illumination even far from a window. A teacher should find such combination of light, which will be acceptable for all (or for the majority of) students.
5. Kinesthetic factors Some people need to make certain motions while they study. Some of the students like to drum with their fingers or foot, to touch their hair from time to time, to rumple a ball in their hands or to masticate a chewing gum. A teacher must not limit the students in their actions as long as they disturb the rest of the students.
6. Motion Physical exercises are very important for human body, especially for children. A teacher has to make short pauses after 20-30 minutes of studying. It’s useful for students to have a short walk or to stretch the muscles while their brakes.
