| Note-Taking | Your learners may give a lot of reasons for why they don't take notes. They may say that their instructor speaks too fast or reads directly from the book. Don't accept these words. Keep in mind that the benefits of taking notes always outweigh the disadvantages.
Benefits • Requires organization on the part of the student. • Requires critical thinking. • Develops active listening skills. • Requires concentration. • Solidifies comprehending. • Provides a record of what was discussed. • Aids student in determining what the instructor thinks is essental. • Strengthens some learning styles.
It is advisable for tutees to bring their notes to every tutoring session. These notes give a possibility for both the tutor and tutee to review a written record. The student can also employ these notes to make up example test questions or flash cards for test review.
Also, the tutor can then check if the tutee is taking efficient notes. Are the notes clear, organized, and coherent? If not, suggest some of the following: • Try always read the chapter to be talked over in class ahead of time. • Identify unfamiliar terms or ideas. • Examine previous lecture notes. This will help you identify points to concentrate on during the lecture. • At the top of your paper label your notes with the subject, date, and chapter (if possible). If you use more than one sheet of paper per day, number and label each page. • Sit close to the front of the room and away from any visual or auditory distractions. • Eat before coming to class. • Remember! It is a great help to have a general understanding of the content ahead of time, but it is difficult to stay concentrated. You may have to constantly evaluate what you need to do in order to keep on task. • Identify verbal and visual keys that indicate essential points. • Use abbreviations or shorthand while writing. This can save your time for thinking about the topics you want to present. Ask if you do not know something. • After the lecture, try to review and/or re-write your notes within a few hours of the lecture. This will help you identify items that you do not understand and reinforce what you have heard.
